Looking to beef up their sound, the band added virtuoso guitarist John Sykes just in time for their biggest gig ever at 1980sReading Festival. Entertaining, but not enough to push them into the top tier of the era. From that perspective, the Tygers hit on all cylinders, and probably make the material sound better than it actually is. I was fascinated by the way each track is as strong as the next, it is an album which masterly blends hard rock and heavy metal. Imagine what Iron Maiden would have sounded like if after Paul Di'Anno left they got a new vocalist who was a bit less operatic than Bruce Dickinson and, whilst still toning down the rougher punk influences on their playing, they didn't go for the more theatrical, progressive-influenced compositional style that would characterise them from Number of the Beast Onwards.
